Android Shakes Up U.S. Smartphone Market

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

••• The Android operating system (OS) covered 28 percent of the U.S. smartphone market in the first quarter of the year, replacing Apple’s iPhone OS to take #2 position.

This is the first time for Android OS to top iPhone, which covered 21 percent of the market, according to the market research firm The NPD Group, PC World said on Tuesday.

RIM’s BlackBerry OS still dominated the market in sales, having a 36 percent market share.

Much of the growth in Android OS sales came from Verizon’s Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris.

The average selling price for all smartphones in the first quarter was $151 in Q1 2010, a 3 percent decrease over the previous year.
