Rupert Murdoch says Apple’s iPad is a ‘game-changer’ for news media

Thursday, August 05, 2010

••• Global media chief Rupert Murdoch says Apple’s iPad will be a ‘game changer’ for newspapers.

The chairman and chief executive of News Corporation said the iPad would allow publishers to attract new readers to their mastheads.

‘It’s a real game changer in the presentation of news,’ Mr. Murdoch said on Thursday during a conference call for the company’s full year profit results.

‘We will have young people reading newspapers. We will have different looking types of newspapers.’

News Corp owns newspapers in the U.S., U.K., Australia and elsewhere.

Mr. Murdoch said he expected to see hundreds of millions of these devices around the world.

‘There will be all sorts of things we can do with them,’ Mr. Murdoch said.

‘As they develop technologically, we have got to to develop our methods of presentation of news.’

News Corp chief operating officer Chase Carey said the iPad ‘really starts to deliver on the promise of multimedia’ for the first time.

In terms of charging for online content, The Times and Sunday Times newspapers in the U.K. started slugging users $1.59 (£1) a day, or $3.18 (£2) a week, to access their content online from the start of July.

Mr. Murdoch said there had been a positive response, but declined to say how many people had paid for subscriptions.

‘We have had a very encouraging number of people subscribing at a good price,’ he said.

‘But we think we are on the right strategy there and we think it’s going well.’

Mr. Murdoch also flagged changes to News Corp’s social networking portal MySpace, which he said was going through a major overhaul under a new management team.

‘It will look very, very different in a few months to what it’s looked for the last few years,’ Mr Murdoch said.

‘We are going to see it out for some time yet.’

News Corp. Posts $875 Million Profit as Ad Sales Rise

NEWS
News Corp. Posts $875 Million Profit as Ad Sales Rise

Wednesday, August 04, 2010

••• Media and entertainment giant News Corp. reported, Wednesday, that it has swung to profit in the fiscal fourth quarter on the back of strong performance from its television networks division which posted impressive ad sales.

News Corp. said its net profit in June quarter was $875 million or $0.33 per share as against loss of $203 million or $0.08 per share in the year ago period.

The company said its revenue moved up 5.7 percent to $8.11 billion.

Analysts, on average, had expected News Corp. to report profit of $0.20 per share on revenue on $7.87 billion.

However, operating profit, or sales minus the cost of goods sold and administrative expenses, slipped 1.7 percent year-on-year in June quarter to $932 million from $948 million.

The media conglomerate said its earnings were driven by strong performance put up by its television networks division, which accounted for more than half of its operating income.

Profits at domestic channels surged by 30 percent while international channels improved 40 percent. Overall, operating profit at cable television networks division, which include channels such as Fox News Channel and FX, surged 31 percent to $563 million on the back of advertising revenue which jumped 11 percent. The division also saw double-digit growth in revenue from fees paid by cable, satellite and fiber video providers.

Operating profit at News Corp.’s broadcast television division also surged 13 percent to $113 million on improved ad sales offsetting higher programming expenses at the company’s national broadcast network – Fox Broadcasting.

The group’s filmed entertainment division also did well but could not beat third quarter performance. Operating income in June quarter dropped 32 percent year-on-year to $137 million. In March quarter, profit stood at $497 million. At the time of announcing third quarter earnings, News Corp. had warned that one should not expect stellar performance from this division in the fourth quarter, largely due to an expected year-over-year decline in the film business due to the timing of releases.

The newspapers and information services division, which include the Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, MarketWatch and Dow Jones, also reported 20 percent surge in profit to $115 million on higher ad revenue, though it was below Street estimates.

The company’s digital media division, which include social networking site MySpace, however, disappointed, reporting an operating loss of $174 million in the June quarter on lower search and advertising revenue. News Corp. said MySpace is set for a “major overhaul.”

News Corp.’s satellite TV division also disappointed, reporting a 37 percent slide in operating income to $97 million on the back of continued weakness at Sky Italia.

To reduce dependence on the economically sensitive advertisement-based revenue, News Corp. said it is beefing up its portfolio of subscription-based assets. In June, it said it has made a bid for the 61 percent stake of pay-TV operator British Sky Broadcasting Group Plc (BSkyB) it doesn’t already own.

“The opportunity for us to expand the scale of our franchises is significant, including through taking advantage of the continual technological advances that will broaden the reach of our core content and distribution businesses,” News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch said in a statement.

The company’s full-year results were more impressive.

News Corp. said its net profit in fiscal year 2010 was $2.5 billion, helped primarily by blockbuster movie “Avatar.” DVD sales of other films like “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” also bumped up its profits. In the prior year, News Corp. incurred a net loss of $3.4 billion, which included a one-time pre-tax impairment and other charges of $9.2 billion.

“These results underscore just how well positioned we are – fiscally, operationally and strategically – for further growth across all of our markets,” Murdoch said.

Shares of News Corp., which owns Dow Jones, Wall Street Journal, New York Post, MySpace and 20th Century Fox among other things, closed up 1.61 percent at $13.85. Following the financial results announcement, the company’s shares were up 3.25 percent in the after-market hours.

Spain win World Cup after Andres Iniesta strikes

NEWS
Spain win World Cup after Andres Iniesta strikes

Sunday, July 11, 2010

••• Spain has won the World Cup in what was more of a scrap than a football match, poorly controlled by English referee Howard Webb. He lost control when he failed to give a yellow card to Van Percy after just 90 seconds of play.

The single goal finally came from Andrés Iniesta in the 25th minute of extra time. The Barça player got himself a yellow card for showing his vest in celebration, where he had written a tribute to his friend and Espanyol player, Dani Jarque , who died last year at the age of just 26. The Dutch would complain there was an offside play ahead of the goal, but there is no doubt that the best side won in the end.

But the 2010 World Cup Final will be remembered for the way the Dutch came out kicking, and the 14 yellow cards presented as a result. Only one red card for the Dutch player, John Heitunga, where many commentators think it should have been three for the team; De Jong certainly should have had a direct red card for kicking Xavi Alonso directly in the chest, and Van Bommel committed far more than one yellow card foul according to most eyes. It seems the Dutch tactic was to use aggression to try to stop Spain from playing, as they had did successfully against Brazil, but this time the Spanish side finally won by at least trying to play the attractive football they are famous for, and justice was done.
On the pitch, Cesc Fábregas came on for an exhausted Xavi Alonso in an attempt to try and get the first goal, but missed a clear opportunity in a one to one with the Dutch goalkeeper. But it was a Cesc pass which led to the Iniesta goal.

Vicente del Bosque also gave Fernando Torres play in the last five minutes of the game, replacing an exhausted David Villa, but El Niño was obviously not fit, and his knee failed again before the end. He collapsed in tears. After the victory, Del Bosque, said it was not only winning, ‘This has very important principles and values for Spain’, he said.
Queen Sofia confessed to being emotional after the victory, as did the Prince and Princess of Asturias, ‘We are very happy. We want to go down to the dressing room to celebrate with them’, they said.

So, Spain has won the World Cup for the first time, and the parties which broke out across the country at the result are set to continue until dawn.

In Madrid plans are well advanced to welcome the 23 players in the squad who will travel through the city in an open top bus and visit the Palace tomorrow. The Plaza Cibeles has been considered too small, so 31,000 square metres has been reserved next to the Manzanares River. Expect total gridlock in Madrid from 7 pm Monday.

Lakers victory parade 2010: Lakers crowned NBA kings again

NEWS
Lakers victory parade 2010: Lakers crowned NBA kings again

Tuesday, June 22, 2010

The LA Lakers are the NBA Champions after taking out game seven of their finals series against the Boston Celtics 83-79 in Los Angeles.

It’s the Lakers’ fifth championship in 11 years and their second in as many seasons, with Kobe Bryant taking out the Finals MVP award in back-to-back seasons.

It was also sweet revenge for LA, who were beaten by the Celtics in the NBA finals two years ago.

The Lakers’ star-studded fan base were suitably happy with the win although several fans took the celebrations a bit too far, starting fires, throwing rocks and bottles at police and jumping on cars in the street.

The plan was to have the Lakers players discuss the season while riding atop a flat-bed truck during Monday’s championship parade. Their answers would then be broadcast to the adoring throng of fans that lined a two-mile route along Figueroa Street.

But whatever Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and the rest of the players said Monday afternoon was lost amid the constant cheering and chanting that greeted the Lakers as the city celebrated the team’s latest NBA championship.

“When you’re playing, you don’t really get a chance to see those who are at home or at a local bar watching the game, supporting and screaming and cheering,” Kobe Bryant said before the parade. “Now you get a chance to put a face to it.”

And there certainly were plenty of faces see – many painted in Lakers colors. The crowd, estimated at more than 1 million, created a purple-and-gold sea on both sides of the street, on top of bus stops, fences and restaurants from Staples Center to USC.

The crowd, many of whom had stood there for five hours, cheered hysterically as the truck holding the Lakers players rolled by. Some fans were even brought to tears by the sight of their heroes.

For more than an hour, the noise was deafening as fans, including a construction crew that had stopped working, chanted “Kobe! Kobe! Kobe! and “MVP! MVP!” Some begged Gasol “look over here” for a picture, while others just wanted Lamar to smile.

There were some who yelled for Sasha Vujacic to marry them, while others simply held up signs with the same request. Vujacic seemed to enjoy the attention, screaming back at the fans and applauding them. Bryant said one woman nearly fainted when she saw the Slovenian guard.

On the other side of the street, one young girl made a sign asking guard Shannon Brown to call her and had included her phone number.

Still other fans simply saluted the 2010 NBA champions with Lakers flags, banners and home-made signs. One promoted Derek Fisher for President (in Spanish), another said “Back to Back without Shaq” and yet another read “This is Kobe’s Town.”

By the reaction Bryant received as the truck rolled by the sign was right.

No other player received as much attention as Bryant, who stood alongside his wife, Vanessa, and his two young daughters during the parade. This is Bryant’s fifth such celebration and he seemed to be enjoying it as much as the first one in 2000.

Still, he said that this title was “the best one by far because it was the hardest one to get.” The Lakers defeated their longtime nemesis, the Boston Celtics, in a decisive seventh game to win their 16th championship.

The two-mile celebration was largely peaceful as thousands of LAPD officers lined the street. The parade included a fire truck that carried the Laker Girls and a rig carrying former Lakers greats such as Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and A.C. Green.

Unlike last year’s celebration, there wasn’t a rally at the end.

“The energy was so crazy, it almost made me go insane,” said Ron Artest, who hoisted his young daughter onto his shoulders for much of the parade. “I almost wanted to jump into the crowd. Maybe I will do that next year.”

Phil Jackson missed the celebration because of medical appointments he had scheduled and could not be changed, according to Lakers spokesman John Black. Jackson has said his decision to return as coach depends largely on his health.

But the Lakers coach was there in spirit. Lakers executive and Jackson’s girlfriend Jeanie Buss wore a yellow cap with the Roman numeral “X” on it, along with a note that read “+1” – signifying Jackson’s 11 NBA titles he has won as coach.

Lakers win NBA title in Game Seven thriller

NEWS
Lakers win NBA title in Game Seven thriller

Friday, June 18, 2010

The Los Angeles Lakers came from behind to beat the Boston Celtics 83-79 in the decisive seventh game of the NBA finals and claim back-to-back titles.

Kobe Bryant battled through an uncharacteristically tough evening to lead all scorers but Pau Gasol took the plaudits, the seven-foot Spaniard recording 19 points and 17 rebounds.

Ron Artest added 20 points as the hosts recovered from a long-time deficit which peaked at 13 points to triumph at the Staples Center.

A final-quarter surge took them ahead for the first time since they briefly led 25-23 in the second, and a pair of free throws from Sasha Vujacic – the Slovenian’s first points of the game – took them out to a decisive two-score margin.A final-quarter surge took them ahead for the first time since they briefly led 25-23 in the second, and a pair of free throws from Sasha Vujacic – the Slovenian’s first points of the game – took them out to a decisive two-score margin.

Boston was without centre Kendrick Perkins, who sprained his right knee in game six of the series, but it embarked on a 13-3 run in the final five minutes of the first period to lead 23-14 at the first interval.

Bryant had taken five shots and over eight minutes to open his account but he briefly clicked to underpin a 9-0 streak which levelled the match for the Lakers.

The match proved a physical encounter and, when the Celtics’ Kevin Garnett – who impressed with 17 points on the night – was sent crashing into the front row of the crowd, Hollywood star and Lakers fan Jack Nicholson had to produce a neat sidestep to avoid being caught up in the collision.

The visitors took almost five minutes to score in the second period but recovered to go in at half-time 40-34 to the good, with Bryant having contributed just eight points on three of 14 field goals.

A Rajon Rondo two-pointer saw the lead move into double figures for the first time at 47-36 and the same player then added a further two en route to 14 for the game.

But Lamar Odom was to the fore as LA cut the gap to 57-53 by the end of the third quarter and a free throw from Artest levelled the scores at 61-61.

Another 9-0 run took them 70-64 ahead but the game remained in the balance as both teams traded three-pointers.

But Vujacic held his nerve at the crucial moment and Rondo’s missed three-pointer allowed Odom to hurl the ball long to Bryant and safety.

Bryant finished with 21 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter, and collected the Bill Russell Award as finals series MVP for the second time as well as winning his fifth title.

He said: ‘This is the sweetest (title). We’ve been downplaying the rivalry with the Celtics but there’s no question, this one’s by far the sweetest because it’s against them – and because it’s the hardest.’

And he reserved special mention for team-mate Gasol, adding: ‘I can’t say enough about ‘Spain’. That guy’s unbelievable, a hell of a player – we wouldn’t have won it without him.’

Of 18 decisive seventh games in finals history, 14 have now been won by the hosts, while every match in this series has been won by the team with the most rebounds – Los Angeles dominating that statistic 53-40 on Thursday night.

Coach Phil Jackson felt both were crucial factors, and said: ‘I don’t know it we’d have won this game without these fans – thank you!’

‘(My advice to the team was) keep rebounding the ball, keep getting those loose balls.’

Speculation has surrounded Jackson’s future – as well as that of opposite number Doc Rivers – and he would not be drawn on whether he will stay with the franchise and attempt to win a third successive title for the third time in his career.

‘I’ve got to take some time and think about this,’ he said. ‘This was great, I’ll wait to make that decision in a week.’

Owner Dr Jerry Buss, meanwhile, felt the hostility towards his team fired it up.

He said: ‘I think we want it more. Everybody abuses LA – ‘beat LA, beat LA’ – I think it gives us a lot of energy.’

Jubilant celebrations over the Los Angeles Lakers’ dramatic win in the NBA championship turned rowdy in scattered sections of the city, with raucous revelers hurling rocks and bottles at officers, setting fires and jumping on vehicles.

Los Angeles city firefighters responded to 37 incidents within a half-mile radius of Staples Center in a three-hour period following the game, spokesman Brian Humphrey said. There were 15 rubbish fires, one vegetation fire, three vehicle fires and 18 medical aid requests for people ill or injured, Humphrey said. Eight people were transported by ambulance to hospitals. Humphrey didn’t know the nature or extent of the injuries, but said some were “quite serious.”
One police officer suffered a broken nose after someone threw an object at him, Police Chief Charlie Beck said.

‘Beat the Jew’ game probed at U.S. school

NEWS
‘Beat the Jew’ game probed at U.S. school

Saturday, June 5, 2010

••• Seven seniors at a Southern California high school are facing disciplinary action for participating in a game called Beat the Jew, in which losers were subjected to ‘incineration’ or ‘enslavement’, a school administrator says.
The game involved some students playing the role of Nazis, who blindfolded and dropped off other students playing Jews who must find their way back to the campus, said Sherry Johnstone, assistant superintendent of personnel for Desert Sands Unified School District.

It was not immediately clear exactly how losing players were punished, she said.

Seven seniors at La Quinta High School could be suspended or barred from graduation, among other measures, Johnstone said.

‘This is appalling to us,’ she said. ‘We want our students to understand the horror of a title like this.’
The district started investigating a week ago after students reported the game to administrators.

The game was promoted online, attracting about 40 students. Seven showed up to play one evening in the campus parking lot, Johnstone said.

The district is working with Jewish organisations to review its tolerance curriculum. A voluntary tolerance program will be held after school.

The matter also has been referred to La Quinta police. A call to the Police Department was not immediately returned.

Experience Android at 4G
HTC EVO™ 4G, the world’s first 3G/4G Android handset, features the latest iteration of the increasingly popular Android platform. Leveraging the Android 2.1 platform, HTC EVO™ 4G can deliver a wide array of useful new features:

  • Android 2.1 enables a new way to search with pictures instead of words. Google Goggles™ works with everything from books, DVDs and barcodes to landmarks, logos, artwork and even wine labels. A picture taken of the Golden Gate Bridge returns all of the information anyone would need to know about the structure. By just taking a picture of several restaurant options, HTC EVO™ 4G will provide restaurant reviews to ensure the best choice.
  • Text messaging and email composition feature built-in voice-to-text technology. By simply pressing a microphone button on the screen, messages can be composed by just speaking, making keeping in touch faster and easier than ever.
  • Through Android Market™, HTC EVO™ 4G users have access to thousands of useful applications, widgets and games to download and install on their phone, with many more to come.

In addition to today’s Android apps, the performance of which will be enhanced by 4G speed, application developers will be introducing new apps that take advantage of 4G power in new ways – games and communications tools and other apps that bring together video, presence and location simultaneously, and capabilities that haven’t yet been imagined. For example, an application developer might create an app that allows a customer to simultaneously watch a streaming sporting event while pulling down stats and conducting a video chat with a friend.

A Sprint 4G developer guide is available today from the Sprint ADP Web site http://developer.sprint.com. The Sprint 4G developer guide explains how to develop on an Android 2.1 handset and how to take advantage of 4G and unique hardware/software capabilities, including how to use a forward-facing camera in an app; how to use HDMI output; and how to build in network detection (3G, 4G or Wi-Fi) to optimize quality of data in an app. The Sprint 4G developer also will include sample apps and source code that highlight these features. It will supplement the Android 2.1 SDK.  As a charter member of the Open Handset Alliance™, Sprint is actively engaged with the Android community. Sprint has employed an open Internet approach, and the Sprint Application Developer Program has been providing tools for third-party developers since Sprint first launched the Wireless Web on its phones in 2001.

“Sprint and HTC have come together to propel the Android platform into the 4G world with the introduction of HTC EVO™ 4G,” said Andy Rubin, vice president, mobile platforms at Google. “The Android platform was developed to give people unmatched mobile connectivity to the Internet. By combining this vision with the promise of Sprint’s first-to-market 4G technology, HTC EVO™ 4G makes accessing thousands of applications from Android Market, using Google™ services like Google Goggles, Google Earth™ and the all-new Gesture Search, or simply browsing the Web faster, easier and more enjoyable than ever before.”
